如缺少某幾種微量元素，而犬隻本能上會去「癈物利用」，希望從排泌物中補充不足。 另一方面，有些狗狗的營養太好了，糧食內的脂肪、糖、鹽等等的成份太重，也會另便便變得「美味」。 有時候，糧食的成份並沒問題，但狗狗的胰臟不能分泌足夠的酵素，令某些營養不會被分解，才形成狗狗有食便便的習慣。 患有這病的犬隻，多數會感覺很肚餓，但不論吃多少東西，也仍然很瘦。 患有腸道寄生蟲問題的犬隻，也會有同樣情況。 如主人發現狗隻有以上問題，應向獸醫求助。

有人認為，母犬在幼犬出生時會不斷為牠們舔肛門來刺激排便，並吃下幼犬的便便， 有些犬隻會將這行為記入腦中，並在長大後模擬母犬。 有些犬隻，是因為在不適當的地方排便而受到主人懲罰，就算以後在正確的地方排便，也會感到害怕，便用「乾脆把便便吃了！」來消滅證據。 食糞僻也可能是一種犬隻階級鬥爭的表現。 比較弱勢的犬隻，會用吃了強勢犬隻的便便來「示好」
。
以上種種心理因素，也只能靠主人密切觀察，才能猜出端倪。當主人們猜到原因，便可以用不同的訓練方式，希望能改變狗狗食糞僻的習慣。主人和狗狗的關係越密切，能猜出原因和改善情況的機會也越高。
